Subject: Vase Grinder not grinding

I've got one of your vase-style pepper grinders. It worked well for a couple months and now the pepper just won't come out. I've adjusted it every possible way and even removed the ceramic grinder and put it back in. Still, it won't let pepper out very often at all. Maybe a little comes out here or there and then nothing until I take it apart again. Can you help me?

Dear Jason,

Thank you for your inquiry. It sounds as if the grinding mechanism has stopped working properly. This actually had been a problem when the vase grinders were first introduced. However, this flaw has recently been resolved by the redesign and improvement of the small grey cap piece and ceramic grinder piece. Once these pieces are replaced, the vase grinder
will work as it should.

Since you have included your address, we'll be glad to get those parts out to you ASAP. Should you have further questions, please don't hesitate to contact us. Thanks.

  1. Good lesson for us all. I probably would have, after a few choice words, simply thrown it away.

  2. There are few sensations in cooking that I find more satisfying than the feeling of a peppermill cracking thru peppercorns with each mechanical crank. It's like cracking your knuckles or a good chiropractor adjustment. To keep in the good graces of my favorite gadget, I'll put up a little fight.

I can wholeheartedly agree with you about a good peppermill.

In my house, in fact, my better mill is in my kitchen for cooking - the place of honor it deserves :-)

As for your situation, it seems that Kuhn Rikon has done themselves well with their response - it's free marketing for them of the best sort. Your post casts them in a very good light, and certainly piques MY interest in their products.

  4. I just got my replacement parts and now the thing works as good as new, if not better. The company was very classy. As a reward, I left a stellar review on Amazon.

In case you all missed it, the trick here (in my opinion) is to always include your mailing address when you raise consumer heck. It gives them an easy way to resolve the situation.
